Kansas School Counselor of the Year

The Kansas School Counselor Association (KSCA) is pleased to announce the three finalists for the
2016-2017 Outstanding Kansas School Counselor of the Year awards program. The three state
finalists are…

        Melinda DeGruson, Lakeside Elementary School, Pittsburg Community Schools
        Kristi Dixon, Blue Valley Southwest High School, Blue Valley School District
        Karen Thompson, Ravenwood Elementary, Olathe School District  

The Kansas School Counselor Association (KSCA) is pleased to announce the selection of Kristi
Dixon as the 2016-2017 Kansas Outstanding School Counselor of the Year. Ms. Dixon is a School
Counselor at Blue Valley Southwest High School in the Blue Valley School District.

The selection was announced on November 3 rd at Emporia State University at the 67 th Annual
Counseling Conference sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education and Emporia
State University.

The KSCA Counselor of the Year award recognizes outstanding school counselors serving in the
state of Kansas. Kristi Dixon was one of three state finalists considered for the award and now
becomes the state nominee for the American School Counselor Association’s 2018 National
School Counselor of the Year recognition.

Kristi Dixon represents the many school counselors in Kansas devoted to making a positive
difference in the lives of students and their school communities.

Nominations for the school counselor awards program are submitted to the Kansas School
Counselor Association.   An awards committee consisting of school counselors, counselor
educators, and school administrators review the applications to make a selection for the award.   
The KSCA Outstanding Counselor of the Year is selected on several criteria:  school counseling
innovations, effective school counseling programs, leadership and advocacy skills, and
contributions to student advancement.

The Kansas School Counselor Association is a state professional organization and a division of the
American School Counselor Association.  Both organizations assist school counselors in the work
they do through school counseling programs.   School counselors are professionals who assist all
students in academic achievement, career planning, and social/emotional development to
promote success in school and life.  


KSCA Principal Advocate Award

The KSCA Principal Advocate Award is to recognize administrators who have made significant
contributions to the development and implementation of school counseling programs.  This year,
the Kansas School Counselor Association would like to recognize the following Kansas Principals
during National Educational Bosses' Week for demonstrating their belief in and support of school
counseling programs that positively impact students on a daily basis.  

Each Principal was recognized at the 2016 KSDE Fall Counseling Conference in Emporia, KS,  on
November 3rd.

KSDE Standard of Excellence in School Counseling Award

Welcome to the process of recognizing your school counseling program.  Working together, the
Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and Kansas School Counselor Association (KSCA)
are seeking to recognize outstanding school counseling programs.  The goal is to honor
comprehensive, data driven school counseling programs that promote the academic and personal
growth of ALL students.  

Begin today!!  Use the application link to apply and get started on the process.  There are three
levels of recognition:  Emerging School Counseling Program, Model School Counseling Program,
and Distinguished School Counseling Program.   The three levels recognize the commitment to
excellence at different stages of implementation.  Applications are evaluated by a school
counseling review board using a standard rubric. Feedback will be provided to all applicants.
